The fort was built in 1721 along the Altamaha River, and served as the southernmost outpost of the British Empire in the Americas until 1727. The fort was contructed in, what was considered at that time, the colony of South Carolina, but territory later settled as Georgia. It was to be one of many forts intended to precipitate frontier settlements that would expand Great Britain's southern border at the Savannah River to the Altamaha River. The fort was located many days away from the next closest British town, Beaufort, South Carolina to the north. It was built at a time when Great Britain, France, and Spain were all engaged in a heated imperial competition to control the Southeast, especially the Savannah-Altamaha River region.
