Zusammenfassung

April 2, 2010. A day that changed the German military forever. In the dust of northern Afghanistan's Chahar Dara district, what began as a routine patrol quickly turned into a nightmare. Ambushed by a large, coordinated Taliban force, a small unit of German soldiers found themselves pinned down in open terrain, outnumbered and fighting for their lives in the deadliest engagement involving German troops since World War II. The Good Friday Battle is a gripping, minute-by-minute account of that harrowing day. It is a story of courage under fire, the chaos and uncertainty of combat, and an extraordinary bond forged between allies. As German forces struggled against restrictive rules of engagement and dwindling support, their survival came to depend on a handful of daring U.S. Army MEDEVAC pilots. Flying Black Hawks through intense enemy fire, these American crews risked everything to rescue their wounded German allies, transforming a desperate withdrawal into a legendary display of skill and valor. Drawing on extensive research and firsthand accounts, veteran and historian Dr. Wolf Gregis reveals the brutal realities faced by German soldiers in Afghanistan while honoring the courage and sacrifice of all who fought. More than a military history, The Good Friday Battle is a searing demand for recognition for a generation of veterans long forgotten in Germany. For readers of Black Hawk Down and The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor, The Good Friday Battle offers a powerful portrait of coalition warfare and the harsh realities of modern combat.

Wolf Gregis is a prominent German author, veteran, and advocate. Born in 1981, he served as an armor officer in the Bundeswehr, deploying to Afghanistan in 2008 and 2009 with assignments in Mazar-e-Sharif and Kabul. Following his service, he earned his doctorate in the humanities and has since become a leading voice for the "forgotten generation" of German combat veterans. Gregis is the creator of Helm ab (Helmets Off), Germany's most influential independent podcast focused on military life and veteran affairs. He gained national attention through his advocacy campaign #20JahreDesinteresse (20 Years of Indifference), which challenged the German government and public to acknowledge the reality of the war in Afghanistan. His literary debut, the novel Sandseele, was highly acclaimed for its visceral depiction of the soldier's experience. With The Good Friday Battle (originally Das Karfreitagsgefecht), Gregis authored a Spiegel Bestseller that serves as the definitive account of the Bundeswehr's most significant engagement. He lives in Rostock, Germany, where he continues to bridge the gap between civil society and the military community.
